Now, I am probably going to explain this really badly, but bear with me and shout if I am too vague....
I was at a techy/geeky meet up thing last week called
bathcamp, where we heard a speaker talking about arduino.
Now, I am not an electronics person, so most of the technical detail of this talk was a bit above my head. However, the basic premise seemed to be that arduino is a kind of circuit board that has the capability to take real world stimuli from all kinds of sensors and convert it into something a computer can use for all sorts of purposes, and vice versa by taking a computer program and converting this into a real world action (whether this be blowing bubbles anytime anyone tweeted with a particular hash tag - quite a cute device - or something more complex). It is supposed to be a very cheap, very easy way for complete amateurs to build all sorts of things.
This made me think: could we create an installation (perhaps for the IOCT) that took information collected from sensors as someone dances in a particular area and converted these into some sort of multimedia representation of the dance? This could mean movements being represented by sounds that reflect the speed, height or texture of the movement (legato/staccato), a more graphic representation or even being converted into words to create some form of poetry.
Without worrying too much about the technical coding side of things, I wondered if anyone wanted to brainstorm here with me about how such an installation might work? It is a very hazy idea at the moment, but could be a bit of fun - whether we manage to build it or not! If any of us do want to build it, I am sure we could find the technical expertise to do it either here in Bath or in Leicester, so this is just a purely imaginative brainstorm....
Anyone up for that? What do you think? How might a dance "look" in other art forms?
